sorry for the delay just relaxing catching up on the list.
You could do what I do and have done:
I built a drive using one system with the full compliment of floppy,
good cd, etc. I opened the case, disconnected the cd drive, then I
 added the target hard drive, did the drive prep, and dd' the 
stuff I wanted on it.  Moved that drive back to its target machine,
and had two running.

That is the simple discription, Yeah I had some fun iwth diff size
drives, doing the label and hte boot stuff right but that should 
be pretty easy now.

As far as cd caddy, I can find them in various cd and media supply 
shops (including some university surplus places) I think the caddy
runs for about 3 bucks here i nthe states.
