...just another note on this: the machine had failed and was replaced with
a fresh 1.5.2 install.  Compaq didn't seem receptive to adding a named
group/user to the system to permit tracking of -current, so that bet is
off (i don't blame them, with a user request like that, that raises the
question of where you draw the line)

...other than that, the machine is still readily available for use.
