OK. I commited the patch anyway, because it's bad to return to the
mid-layer "something did go wrong, I can't handle it" without explaining
at last what did go wrong.
And Matthew commited his change as well, because it's wrong to say the
return code is invalid when it's valid, even if we can't do much with it.
