The XFree 4.2.0 server is really busted on Alpha right now, AFAICT. I
opened PR 17109 on it, and placed pointers to previous list messages that
indicate workarounds (that no longer work...). The 4.1.0 codebase from
back in July 2001 was the last I could get running in a stable fashion on
NetBSD-alpha.
Crazy thing is, I'm now running solid using a 4.2.0 userland and a 4.1.0
server.
