Also, it might be worth noting that I/O doesn't seem nearly as fast or
smooth with 4x 300 MHz (2 MB cache) as it did when I was running 1x 400 MHz
(4 MB cache)
I just FTP'd a 400 MB file from the Alpha to a 800 MHz P2 running Linux,
and I'm only getting 2.19 megabyte/second on a 100 mbit fdx link on an
otherwise idle network. I can't remember what my speeds were with the
single 400 MHz processor but I'm pretty sure it was considerably faster
than this.
As a comparison, I FTPd the same file from two other machines on the LAN to
this same workstation and here's what I got:
133 MHz Pentium/Linux 2.6 megabyte/second
2x200 MHz Ultra 2/Solaris 6.7 megabyte/second
Also, I/O is noticably "choppy" when doing FTP or even untarring a large
file locally. I noticed lots of 1/4 second or so pauses while performing
either of these operations. I never had this problem when running a single
400 MHz processor
