Welcome back Andrew..
Big advantages with 4.2.1 over 4.0.2 are:
1)Full acceleration of driver(XAA mode)
2)Driver selection is HUGE..in comparison..free from Matrox MII/Elsa
cards...4-8MB (1996-1997 junk.)
Run at least 1.6J kernel and userland to see speed improvements.
Matrox MII is known to be buggy on 164LX, may not even work in
XFree86-4.2.1. Certainly did not for me. Green artifacts is driver mga
for this card see:

The 164LX firmware accepts Nvidia cards, SRM has no problem with these
cards, they are very available(PCI version) and work very well on the
164LX box in 4.2.1. I have tested Riva TNT2, GeForce2, Geforce4 MX440
cards up to 64MB VRAM.'ogle' dvd player gives 17->22fps with synchronous
audio on my 164LX using the last Nvidia card. There are wscon 'issues'
already discussed on this list as well on the tech-x11 list. It is
interesting to note that the OpenBSD port of wscons to alpha has the
same problems:
