     I have a 500a with exactly the same problem booting from the SCSI
disks.  The problem is that the SRM will not recognize the Adaptec
2940 SCSI card (yours may be a different model) even with the very
latest firmware update.  If you want to boot from a SCSI disk you'll
need to get a SCSI card that the SRM knows -- there are several, just
ask Mel on this list.

     The solution I found is exactly what you had in mind.  I boot off an
8.4 GB IDE drive.  Problem averted.  Just be sure to move the CD-ROM
to the secondary IDE channel and put the IDE disk on the primary
channel.  Otherwise NetBSD will try to boot from the CD-ROM
immediately after rebooting from sysinst.

     ...and don't worry.  NetBSD will see your SCSI card and disks just
fine!  Here is my dmesg (minus some useless bits at the end).  Notice
that I need to install the 1.6J kernel!  :)
