Unfortunately building a server(compile XFree86-4.3.1), and stability of
the OS using the server are disjoint events. What i get so far:
1)164LX box (my wife's e-mail server running 1.6K, mozilla, evolution..
etc) this box has NEVER had X crash-> 'Caught signal 11' -return to text
mode in daily use since early Jan. with XFree86-4.2.1 installed . With
4.3.1-she gets- religiously running (on start)mozilla or xpdf or
evolution:(tail -f /var/log/XFree86.0.log:
(WW) Mouse1: bad wsmouse event type=1046870225
(WW) Mouse1: bad wsmouse event type=1046870243

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11.  Server aborting
...
No cards (glint,ati,-tested)except Nvidia will boot into X, return to
text is black(text) on black(screen).Returning to XFree860-4.2.1 the box
is fine again ...(she will not let me near it).
2)PWS600:running 1.6O, Here the server also aborts frequently running
programs such as communicator and xpdf. I also see something new in
dmesg:
file:table is full-increase kern.maxfiles or MAXFILES
added 'option MAXFILES = 9999' to kernel config.
pstat -p pid(Xfree86) shows a large # of open files.
This box has also never 'Caught signal 11' with 4.2.1(Since Nov-02),
running the same programs. On the 'bright' side my Radeon 7500 returns
to text mode Red(screen), white(text) in 4.2.1 i get 'color' patches.
With the above problems i see unlike apparently dhop@nwlik.com ,i will
wait on offering XFree86-4.3.1.tar.gz, those interested in testing or
using this code build your own from cvs xsrc with patched alpha_video.c
or cp my bsd_video.c-> alpha_video.c and do a 'make World' in
xsrc/xfree/xc.
