Try this to wipe the disk.  the 'disklabel -W' is my suggestion.  you
may need the sleep command to keep the W-ness set---not sure, but it
won't hurt.

# sleep 90 < /dev/rsd0c &
# disklabel -W sd0
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rsd0c bs=512 count=16
