use of cables like those could explain the problem since the flow
control pins are wired to DTR/DSR on the peecee, which peecees
normally don't treat as flow control. They've matched up the literal
names the manufacturers give to the pins rather than what the pins do
in common practice. I thought there was some termios option to do
DTR/DSR flow control, but it looks like I misremembered.
