Failsafe didn't help, but a new memory module did.
Things look much better now. I completed an install and started to poke
around but the on-board ethernet doesn't work. (RealTek 0x8169, Rev. 0x10;
"not configured".) So I will need to get a working NIC. (No spares. (^&)
It doesn't configure the audio, and the USB 2.0 port seems to only come up
as 1.1, but those are relatively minor.
