This reads to me as: "In order to increas MAXPHYS to 128K I want to
disable PATA drive that don't support 58-bit LBA mode because they don't
support >64K transfers.  But they don't support MAXPHYS transfers anyway,
only up to MAXPHYS-512 bytes."

That doesn't look like a consistent arguemnt to me.

What actual technical problems do you want to address this way?
Preferably ones that we have actually observed in the real world.
