Yes, you need to either compile a new kernel with
options SERCONSOLE
or (simpler) patch the "serconsole" variable to 0 instead of -1 in your
usual kernel.
See arch/amiga/dev/ser.c:
#ifdef SERCONSOLE
int serconsole = 0;
#else
int serconsole = -1;
#endif
I was using a serial console on my Amiga 1200 all the time.
