Yes, upgrading from 1.6 is supported, it was the previous major
release.  Upgrading from 1.5 (and possibly 1.4) shouldn't be a big
problem either.

The configuration files in /etc/ will probably have changed quite
a bit, see etcupdate(8) and be prepared to adjust some configurations
manually.
