I found I could trigger the issue with the serial port by dumping a large
amount of text to the console.. for example "cat /etc/*" when the issue
occurs the sheevaplug/guruplug locks up completely (doesn't respond to pings
or anything)

After applying my patch the above test doesn't cause it to lock up.
