Well, I'm not exactly looking for a router, but the problems you
describe are busting my chops too. I actually thought I was the only
one who kinda noticed the issue because the faster ARM boards
(especially the PI) all have Ethernet connected via USB and no SATA or
that connected via USB too. They have plenty of CPU power but you
can't send out the information at the same rate you produce it. Or you
could have a MIPS board and let the NIC wait for the CPU to process
the data you sent in.
I currently have a OX server running the the company's LAN on a PI3.
All the slowness comes from the slow access of the HDD (an SSD would
be completely useless) and the slow network speed. Using a MIPS board
with only 512MB of RAM probably would work any better, it would just
shift the bottle-neck to somewhere else.
