Thank you.  It did, as it motivated me to try this out on
an old 3B, which also didn't work.  I then tried the
USB-UART bridge in a loopback configuration (Rx connected
directly to Tx).  I expected to see my input echoed back
but it was still silent.  So I suppose the adapter may be
faulty.
