This is the first time I have asked for help, I hope it is different community to that of the stack overflow with their answer to everything is to DD the hard-disk when your computer is running...or something just as rude.

I have a Kirkwood based GuruPlug with the same mvsata and have used SATA
disks with it (and also sata disks with an external port multiplier).

I had various stability issues with mvsata on an identical GuruPlug and
a different disk setup in netbsd-8 and netbsd-9 (so that machine ran
netbsd-7 untill it finaly died recently), but never saw it not
discovering the disks at boot time.
