Sounds like you just rebooted in single-user mode. Single-user mode starts up
with only the / partition mounted read-only and /usr not mounted at all. This
means there was either an error in mounting the disks or you have the 'single
user mode' box ticked in the booter. Check and see whether there is an error
message.
