I installed RiscBSD for the first time one week ago.
I put fvwm into the .xinitrc and have never had any problem with it.

The only problems related to X I've noticed are:
 _ Slow redisplay of things like window title, scroll bar; it's quite
   strange: for instance, concerning the scroll bar of an xterm, I get
   white strips, it's not regular.
 _ Bad screen modes in 16bpp.
