  Presumably it won't be long before kernels can decompress the 
md filesystem (and themselves) like Linux can. 

  I seem to remember reading a few months ago about libz being compiled 
into the kernel to enable this sort of thing to be done, but I don't know 
what sort of timescales would be involved.
