List of Frequently Asked Questions for RiscBSD Users
on the Formation of Causality Limited
In this document, 'we' refers to the working members of Causality
Limited.
Q: What is Causality Limited, and why has it appeared?
A: The worldwide demand for ARM systems, and software to run on them, is
increasing at an incredible rate. We have observed a niche in the
marketplace that we can fill, namely providing a cost-effective
source of contractable ARM expertise.
Q: Who are we?
A: At the moment, Causality Limited's employees are:
Robert Black
Mark Brinicombe
Neil Carson
Scott Stevens
These names will no doubt seem familiar to users of the RiscBSD
distribution.
Q: Does this mean the end of RiscBSD?
A: Certainly not. The RiscBSD team (some of which now work for Causality
Limited) will continue to work on the free distribution of RiscBSD in
their spare time (though it may be a while before Mark has much of
that!). In addition, some of the commercial work being done by
Causality Limited will benefit the free distribution.
Q: If NetBSD/arm32 remains free, how can someone fund a company from it?
A: The situation can be likened to that of Cygnus and the GNU tools. The
distribution will remain 'free,' what we are selling is our skills
in working with ARM systems, including NetBSD/arm32. We do not expect
NetBSD/arm32 to remain the core of our business in the long term,
though we will continue to develop and support it.
Q: Does this mean that the pace of developments will slow down?
A: No, but the focus of development made by those members of the RiscBSD
team who are working for Causality Limited will be dictated largely
by commercial interests.
Q: So the free distribution will remain the same, yes?
A: The free distribution will remain free. However some features, and
enhancements to the operating system, may only be available in binary
form for a short while after their creation.
Q: What happens to people like Mark and Rob on the port-arm32 mailing
list?
A: Mark, Rob and everyone else will stay subscribed to the mailing list
in the same way as before, and will endeavour to answer user's
queries. Mark will also remain the NetBSD/arm32 port master. However,
as everyone's time is now more precious, could we please ask that
general user's queries (how do I edit password files, mount CD ROMs,
etc.) be posted more to the current-users mailing list rather than
the port-specific one. Also, please consult the FAQ before asking
questions.
Q: Does Causality Limited have an internet presence?
A: Yes. You can e-mail:
rob@causality.com : Rob Black
mark@causality.com : Mark Brinicombe
neil@causality.com : Neil Carson
scott@causality.com : Scott Stevens
info@causality.com : Product/technology information
sales@causality.com : Sales information
as well as having a look at the www site at:
http://www.causality.com.
However, we would ask that e-mail messages to the company address are
of a purely commercial nature. The domain is very kindly held by
Argonet, so we would like to minimise the load on their machines as
much as possible. Our other e-mail addresses will continue to
function though please not for company business, of course:
mark@netbsd.org : Mark Brinicombe
R.Black@ic.ac.uk : Rob Black
Carson@rmcs.cranfield.ac.uk : Neil Carson
S.K.Stevens@ic.ac.uk : Scott Stevens
Q: What happens to the CD ROM and the FTP site?
A: Currently, they will both be run in the same way as the past. Any
changes will be announced to this list before they happen, though it
is likely that in the near future CD ROM releases will be produced
and marketed by Causality Limited.
Q: What's going to happen at shows and things?
A: The company will be exhibiting at popular shows such as Wakefield and
Acorn World '97. At the moment, a shared stand is planned with
RiscBSD and Simtec Electronics for both shows. At the Wakefield show,
we will be entered into the plans as `RiscBSD/Causality;' at Acorn
World, we will be entered into the plans as 'Causality Limited.'
