There is a very keen Linux project for this:

They have been inundated with free hardware and info. Well they got the
docs from Psion and Geofox and a free Geofox box.
I think the Geofox is probably more useful with it's bigger display.
There are some people working on a PalmPilot Linux port as well I think.
