I'm running the new XF86_S3V X server on a -current(ish) 1.4P kernel.
It's generally fine, but if xdm (or kdm) is run at boot time (from
the end of /etc/rc.local), then the keyboard is locked. There is no
response to any keypresses including the Ctrl-Alt-Fx combinations.
Telneting in and killing the X server so that a new server is spawned
fixes the problem. This is similar to problems with the old server when
a getty was running on the same virtual terminal, however there is no
getty running on /dev/ttyE4 (which is where the X server appears to reside).

If xdm is not run in /etc/rc.local, but is instead run manually after
logging in as root, then once again everything works fine.

Why does the first X server spawned by xdm, if (and only if) xdm is run at
start up, lock the keyboard, but none of the subsequent servers?
