Do you know what variants? Do they use special formats?

I think both above points can be solved with iteconfig. Although switching
the display mode of the console sometimes causes the system to hang. I have
not yet been able to find the cause of this.

Yes, I think the next release will at least be 2.7.0, it might even be
2.7.1.

I assume /usr/bin/man is still there and executable?
Try: 'ktrace man kvm_read' and 'kdump | more', maybe this will give a
clue.
