Maybe I'm missing something, but a SCSI bus has to be terminated on *both*
ends. If I interpret your setup correctly, it looks like:

   host     ----- drive1 ----- drive2 ----- drive3 ----- terminator
   adapter

This means that you are missing a terminator on the host-adapter...
