        Could you use a current kernel to test the sysinst.fs below?
        It uses "sysctl kern.root_device kern.root_partition" instead
        of kernfs to determine the root partition:

        I'm curious to see how far it gets.

        I'm trying to determine if prepare.fs or miniroot.fs do anything
        useful anymore...
