I apologize for my ignorance but I am not sure how to patch the sources 
with the following patch:

http://only.mawhrin.net/~cdi/netbsd/cobalt/hd44780.diff.gz

I know I obviously need to unzip the patch but I am not sure how to 
patch from there. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
