Lars, I recently went through the same issues.  One thing you should
understand is that the IP Slave program does not actively grab a kernel
image from tftp.  You must create a static arp entry on your linux box
that points to the dreamcast and then feed the kernel image to IP Slave as
it is a daemon.  You will want to use netcat or some other program that
can upload a file to a port on another machine.  There is already a fairly
good FAQ, though not perfect, at this URL: http://209.126.171.92/  If you
want to write your own I'd be willing to host it at pheared.net.

Also, as far as a root fs and a kernel image, I found those on
ftp.netbsd.org under arch/sh3 I think.  It takes some searching which I
think could benefit some documenting.  Anyways, there's my limited
knowledge of this topic.
