I also use the 20010610 snapshot from hpcsh. My kernel is 1.5ZA,
-current from 1 or 2 weeks ago.

How did you capture the output? I don't assume you typed it in... :-)

Yes, the same here. With another variation: it also happens when root
is on a cd. It apparently can read from the fs, as in both cases, nfs
and cdrom, it complains when /dev/console is not there.

But the "init: copying out.." line is last thing to be displayed.

BTW, what does this "init: copying out.." line mean? Who displays it,
init or the kernel?
