Sorry, but the guide is useless.  For the modem to work, it needs
firmware.  The firmware is copyrighted by Connexant.  And the guide
does not say how to write your own.

Maybe this should be on the FAQ?  The topic does pop up every so
often, so it qualifies for the "Frequently" bit at least...  :-9
