Ok, small update:

I changed
audio* at aica?
to
audio* at audiobus?
and the system hangs instead of panics. Not responding to ping or Ctrl-Alt-Esc.

Btw, it takes several minutes to upload a kernel with ip upload slave, wonder if the el cheapo broadband router could be to blame?

 No idea about the audio issue,
 but as for the upload being low, try
 stripping the kernel before upload.  The ip
 slave always uploads the
 entire ELF, not
 just the LOADable sections.
