Adding the above to my "xorg.conf" file does help. It gets past the
various "undefined symbol" errors and finally results in:
X.Org X Server 1.10.6

Before reporting problems, check http://wiki.X.Org
to make sure that you have the latest version.

(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.

(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(EE) SMI: Failed to load module "int10" (module does not exist, 0)
Memory fault
So, I've finally returned to this annoying error, which I first reported
here:
http://mail-index.netbsd.org/port-evbmips/2014/02/01/msg000165.html
How to disentangle the SMI Xorg driver from PC-isms?
Alas, the server didn't leave a core dump, so no clue what it faulted on.
