If I get a chance this week I will go back and look at the documentation for
the 345/375 and see if the same "magic" is needed as for the hp700 (or if
there is something else going on.

Note that the 375/380 has a buffered UART where the 340 does not.  Should
check the doc for the 16550 chip and see if there are constraints on changing
attributes (e.g. via dcaparam) which there are chars in the FIFO, quite
possibly there are.
