...I had problems with a Quantum disk as well, but they had nothing
to do with SCSI-2 mode.  I put the disk in SCSI-1 mode, and it still
Lost.  Certain revisions of Quantum disks are notorious for doing
certain bits of the SCSI protocol wrong...

This is probably a case of:

	(1) the firmware in the card on the PC dealing with the
	    oddities of the disk (this would be cases like aha, bha,
	    etc.)

	(2) the host driver's SCSI protocol engine can deal with the
	    oddities of the disk.

Unfortunately, the hp300 SCSI driver needs a lot of work, most notably
in the SCSI protocol engine (and in SCSI exception handling).

...there have been a few changes, but none really in the protocol engine.

Anyhow, my point is that problem disks are typically ones with botched
protocol engines themselves, and not all disks from a particular
vendor may have those problems...
