I stopped using my hp300/425 due to the network interface "failing".
Still to be determined is whether it was a hardware failure, or it
was the same problem you are having. I used to have a bootable zip
disk around with an older netbsd version I could use to test it, but
if it is just a matter of fixing software, I won't have to go into
the box.
