Ognen and I have been working at getting this going, and have succeeded 
in figuring out what was wrong.  

For the record:  /export was a real directory on / (and not a mount point), 
and thus the correct line for /etc/exports should have been:

  / -alldirs -maproot=root meaculpa.casa.ca

(not exactly obvious :-/ )
