Yeah, give that a go. I'll look at why a non-MP kernel crashes later.
I once tried with GENERIC.MP.
That problem resolved.  However new problem comes. :)
Don't ask 'root device', also hangup.

Can you get a serial console? This will help a lot. Full dmesg would be good and being able to (attempt to) break into ddb when it stops after probing the disks will give us the
chance to see what's going on.
