How about xinit > /tmp/some.log.file 2>&1
That might get you some usefule errors.
I'll check it out when I can, hopefully one night this week.
I've been using ion, which is great, but always open to new alternatives.
The great thing about ion is that you don't need a mouse to switch windows
or anything.
