Thanks for the suggestion. I just found that the newer
1.6.1 netbsd is on the ftp site and includes xi
drivers, although I am still having problems getting
it working (xi0: device timeout etc). I will continue
to play with it.
In the meantime I managed to get a working system by
using a spare 16MB CF card and a PCMCIA card to
transfer all of the packages across (using split to
move base.tgz). Just got X up last night and it all
seems surprisingly fast. Took me a while to spot that
the 16MB card was FAT12 so wasn't mounting correctly.
After that the install is plain sailing thanks to the
excellent instuctions here -
