It might be better if you did not wait (to get the 780 to a more useful
state) before trying the patches.  Cross-building NetBSD/hpcmips from
another platform should work fine, or I can put up a patched kernel
binary if it would help.

I don't think there are virtual consoles on the 780.  Either use GNU
screen or X11.
