Well, I solved my problem!

It turns out that adding the option "ServerNumLock" to the "Keyboard"
section of my XF86Config file solved my mouse button troubles.  No, I
*really* don't have a good explanation of why I even tried it, other
than that when the going gets weird...  :-)

Worked for me, anyway.
