just installed pcvt

any use of 'loadfont' makes my screen fill with garbage.  looks like 
non-interpreted codes as I used to see when adm3as were setup incorrectly.
this on a matrox video card.  ideas?

can I switch screens once I've fired up an xserver?  F9-F12 are caught
by X and ignored.  scon -c 2 gives ioctl VGASETSCREEN failed: Inappropriate 
ioctl for device.
