Thanks a lot. I applied the patch, built a new kernel, booted it and
voila -- system panic again:

 | wdc1 at isa0 port 0x170-0x177
 | panic: intr_establish: bogus irq or type

We are now chasing down the IRQ settings of the machine, but I don't
have the slightest idea how to find out where the problem might be.
