Subject: P200 crashing while probing for "de" ethernet card

I have a P200 motherboard which does not configure the "de" network
card I have in my machine. When 1.2G boots, the machine crashes.
When 1.2.1 boots, it complains that the ethernet address cannot be
read (returns a long string of `f's) but does manage to get past.
Now, the question is...
Does the PCI system assume the BIOS has nailed the PCI cards down at
bootup?
I have this same card in a P100, P133, P166, and alpha ACPpci33 without
a problem.
