actually, the GENERIC kernel config file still has:
# note: the wt driver conflicts unpleasantly with ed devices at the
# same I/O address. The probe reprograms their EEPROMs. Don't
# uncomment it unless you are actually using it. 

Since the ed driver split, this comment is not accurate. Does someone
know which board get their eeprom reprogramed ?
I guess it's the WD/SMC boards (we0/we1 drives) but I'm not sure ...
