You can set "X11_FONT=fixed" in your .doscmdrc to get around that.
It will work, but of course the ibm graphics characters are not there.

I don't know about BSDI, but FreeBSD has a newer version in their tree.
I tried compiling it, but ran into various problems and gave up...
There is a wine package for NetBSD, if you want windows emulation.
It works at least well enough to run windows solitaire...
(which is about all I've tried to run so far.)
