On the advice of the PC weenie at work, I got a copy of Seagate's SGATFMT
program and did a low-level format/verify on the disk.  It got out to about
cyl. 3400 (of 4092) and most of the heads started showing massive errors.

Looks like I'll be calling Seagate for a replacement...
