FWIW, I know the author of one of the fancier CDDA readers
(cddaparanoia), and he's indicated that there are a number of firmware
bugs in different drives that will cause them to go catatonic or even
lock up the SCSI bus until the drive is power-cycled, while reading
raw audio data.
