Is the ISA 509 that different?
However, I have a number of 590 and 900 combos, and a
905TPO.

One thing comes to mind which I think was proposed already:
How about an ifconfig option which can set the default media
selection stored on the card's flash ROM?
It's especially useful for diskless boot where the ROM has no
way to parse "rc.conf" or so.
